Siamo a maggio. È primavera, la stagione del risveglio. Un perfetto scrittore progressista del XXI secolo lancia le sue sfide. La prima è che la letteratura, al di là di tutte le lamentazioni che ogni giorno affollano i mass-media, ha ancora un peso enorme. Non a caso i regimi danno fuoco ai libri. La seconda è che le parole hanno sempre cambiato il mondo e lo faranno ancora. La terza è che la letteratura è democrazia.Mi chiedo che idea della letteratura abbia il perfetto scrittore progressista del XXI secolo.
Ma soprattutto quale sia la sua idea di democrazia. Io ho sempre pensato che la creazione letteraria sia elitaria. Una democrazia,infatti, è tanto più forte quanto più è in grado, attraverso un sistema educativo aperto a tutti, di sradicare l’ignoranza (con la quale dobbiamo fare i conti nel corso di tutta la vita) in modo da rendere accessibili i romanzi di Sterne, di Joyce e di Kafka.
Non è la letteratura che è democratica, è l’accesso a essa che deve esserlo.
